New iPad 2012: Performance Review (Speed that counts) – Part 3

Gaming has been iPad’s forte since its launch and it is eminent to included in game boot time to include in the test. Three games determined if apps load any faster on the new iPad than the iPad 2. First up was one of my favorite games on iOS, Puzzlejuice. The timer went off at the moment the app icon was tapped until the game screen appeared.

Flip Ship, since it has the pedigree of giving hard time to the iPad line wasn’t always the fastest-loading app, and it has a useful progress bar. The timer started from the moment the app icon was tapped until the title screen appeared.

The app downloading is one more thing to take into account. Cut the Rope HD Lite (23.8MB), from the App Store over a closed Wi-Fi network, took 22 sec on the new iPad and 26 sec on the 2011 version.

While overall the new iPad does perform faster, the small increase in speed isn’t by itself worth an upgrade from iPad 2; however, if you’ve got your eye on the iPad for other reasons (like the gorgeous screen, its impressive graphical capabilities, or its fast 4G speeds), well, that’s something I’d be much more inclined to support.
