Pakistani Speaker of National Assembly demands action from Interior Minister
Thursday, March 29th, 2012 3:47:31 by Hamza JahangirSpeaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza on Wednesday directed Interior Minister Rehman Malik for prompt action to normalize situation in Karachi. “Why we are sitting here when Karachi is burning. Why a prompt action is not being
taken,” she inquired after reply of the interior minister to the point of order of members about Karachi.
“When everybody in the House desires peace in Karachi, why do not you go to Karachi and sit with provincial government for an action,” she observed. During his reply Malik had mentioned to a pending bill regarding forensic evidence
and had claimed that due to absence of this provision in Pakistan Penal Code, outlaws escape punishment.
He also insisted to convene an in-camera session of the parliament where he said, he would make startling revelations. But, the Speaker questioned ‘what we shall be doing since such legislation is done. Will the situation continue
to persist?’ She explained that for legislation there is a laid down procedure and till then what action we can take to normalise the situation.
“Karachi is really burning that demands an action,” she remarked that killing a human being is like killing the humanity. The mothers, who are losing their sons, have no political affiliations. Dr Mirza stated that these criminals
are getting out of their party disciplines and sought reply on the progress of parliamentary committee constituted on Karachi situation.
“When everybody here agreed for an action to normalise Karachi situation then why cannot you people go to Karachi and take an action?” she said in reference to the interior minister and the special House Committee on Karachi.
Later, when the interior minister again insisted for an opportunity to brief the House in-camera, Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi informed him that for an in-camera session, the prime minister has to request the speaker under
rule 26 of the Rules of Procedure.
