Rangana Herath takes Srilanka to victory in the first test
Friday, March 30th, 2012 12:07:15 by Taha HabibSrilanka jolted England in the first test by 75 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-test series. Rangana Herath played an influential role in his side’s victory as he picked up 12 wickets in the match to leave the visitors with a lot to ponder upon prior
to the start of the second test.
Only Jonathan Trott showed some resistance for the visitors in their second innings with a well accomplished 112. England got off to a poor start in their second innings in pursuit of 340 as Alistair Cook was caught behind off Herath. Skipper, Andrew Strauss
soon followed him as he was trapped in front of the same bowler.
Kevin Pietersen lost his wicket to Suraj Randiv on the final day, asking Ian Bell and Trott to do a lot of hard work. Bell was adjudged LBW by Rod Tucker off Herath as England continued losing hope. Trott kept on picking up runs from the other hand and
just when the Three Lions were getting back on track, Matt Prior lost his wicket.
The tail offered very little resistance once Trott finally fell for 112 of Randiv. James Anderson, Samit Patel, Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar added just 24 runs as England innings folded for 264.
Herath was declared the Man of the Match as England suffered their fourth successive test defeat in the sub-continent.
