Rain helps South Africa beat India in the one-off T20
Saturday, March 31st, 2012 12:55:22 by Taha HabibSouth Africa defeated India in the only T20 international at Johannesburg on Friday, March 30, by 11 runs courtesy of a Duckworth Lewis method. It was a game played for Jacque Kallis education foundation and all the proceeds went to his charity.
MS Dhoni won the toss and invited the home side to bat first. Richard Levi and Kallis added 22 in 10 balls before Levi departed for 19 of seven balls. Irfan Pathan picked up his wicket. Kallis and Colin Ingram added 119 for the second wicket before the veteran
fell to Ravichandran Ashwin for 61 of 42 balls.
Ingram added 27 more runs with Farhaan Behardein for the third wicket before falling for 78 of 50 balls. His innings included eight fours and three sixes. Justin Ontong made a quick-fire 22 of 7 balls and Albie Morkel 16 of 3 balls to propel the Proteas
to a massive 219/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
Suresh Raina picked up 2/49 in his four overs while Pathan conceded 44 in his four to pick up one wicket. Ashwin was the most successful of the lot conceding 33 in his four overs for a wicket.
Needing 220 to win of their 20 overs, India were going smoothly courtesy of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa. The Men in Blue were cruising at 71/0 after 7.5 overs before rain spoiled the party. Gambhir was batting on 49 off 28 balls while Uthappa had made
18 of 19 balls before the umpires called off the game.
India needed to be 83/0 in order to win the game by the D/L method. Ingram was adjudged the Man of the Match. Indians now fly back home for the fifth season of the IPL which starts on April 4th.
