Saturday, March 31st, 2012 10:42:18 by Usman KhalidIn the recent news, employees and labour at Foxconn have been treated ill, forcing them to work overtime, abusing both the minimum and maximum number of hours that a person can work in a week or a day for that matter. This malpractice stirred the circles of human rights activists who take the labour matters very seriously. A number of reports have forced both the Chinese and the US governments to audit Foxconn’s operations.
US being home to Apple had to protrude in the matter for various reasons. One of them being Foxconn as a part of Apple’s supply chain, the NGOs and government had to highlight the matter of the infringement of the human rights at various levels.
A report in 2011 revealed in detail the working conditions at the site of Foxconn where a number of employees died due to overwork and three committed suicide. There were a number of attempts afterwards but the company managed to evade anymore scandalous events by deploying a wide net across the facilities, according to the report. The report continued to tell that there are protective fences all around the units to fend the employees from running away from the facilities.
The company has been under tight observation after the report concluded that the manufactories treat the employees as slaves.
Apple released a detailed report on its supply chain in January 2012. However, that is apparently no good to activist who demanded a fair and unbiased audit. In the light of a fair audit, Apple recently announced an independent audit of its supply chain by Fair Labor Association (FLA) Apple asked the nonprofit Fair Labor Association (FLA), especially to investigate conditions at Foxconn facilities sin China following reports of unsafe working conditions and a significant uptick in worker suicides. The FLA expects to make its Foxconn audit results available on its Web site in the next few days.
