Iran’s Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salehi has admitted that the economic sanctions on the country are really hampering its progress but made it clear at the same time that Iran will not back off from its nuclear program at any cost.
Since the controversial report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last year, Iran is in the forefront of international politics. Because of the close ties between the US and Israel, Iran is currently facing a number of economic sanctions and
the US is using its international influence against Iran.
In the recent months, a number of countries have broken its relations with Iran. Pakistan is currently going through a massive energy crisis but the US is pressurizing Pakistan to not to go ahead with the Iran-Pakistan gas pipe-line project. So far Pakistan
has shown incredible resistance.
Salehi expressed that the sanctions have surely hurt the Iranian economy but feels that the country has the right to go ahead with the nuclear project as it has signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
“The sanctions may have caused us small problems but we will continue our path,” said Salehi.
The Foreign Minister further added that he understands that Iran is up against a mighty enemy but believes that the people of Iran are brave and they will fight for their rights. He claimed that Iran has the capacity to defend its soil in case of a foreign
expedition.
He added, “We do not underestimate any enemy, no matter how tiny and lowly they are. The regime’s officials — the supreme leader, the president, the army, the (Revolutionary) Guards and Basij (militia) — are completely vigilant. And the nation is prepared
to defend the achievements of Islamic Iran.”
On the other side of the coin, US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton said that the US is not ready to accept a nuclear Iran and this is not something to compromise upon.
“Our policy is one of prevention, not containment. It is incumbent upon Iran to demonstrate by its actions that it is a willing partner and to participate in these negotiations with an effort to obtain concrete results,” she expressed.
