Based on the novel written by Suzanne Collins, the Hunger Games ruled the box office for the second week. It bagged $61.1 million on its second weekend while Wrath of the Titans opened to number two with $34.2 million. Julia Robert’s
Snow White adaptation, ‘Mirror Mirror’ landed at distant third with pocketing $19 million.
With this rate the Hunger Games is on track to cripple domestic records of some famous movies like the final part of Harry Potter and Twilight. The Hunger Games grossed $155 million on its 3-day opening weekend, making it the third
highest grossing film ever. It also became the highest grossing movie of Lionsgate.
Directed by Gary Ross, the flick stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutherson and Liam Hemsworth. It is set on a near future in the nation of Panem where the Capitol selects a boy and a girl from 12 impoverished districts. The 24 contestants
fight to the death on live television. Katnis Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister’s role for the latest match.
The $78 million budgeted movie received Certified Fresh Rating at Rotten Tomatoes. It’s general consensus states, “Thrilling and superbly acted, The Hunger Games captures the dramatic violence, raw emotion, and ambitious scope
of its source novel.”
Tony Macklin, a top film critic, praised the movie by commenting, “The Hunger Games is much more than a game. It is a memorable human experience. Thank the gods for the wonder of literature and the vision of movies. Some of us
still hunger for eloquence on the screen.”
Scott Bowles of the USA Today gave it a score of three out of four and commented, “Like the select participants of its savage sport, The Hunger Games stands triumphant, if scarred and a bit wobbly from the contest.”
Overall, the movie is MUST watch for all genre and is one of the best from Gary Ross.
