Lennox Lewis rematch with Vitali Klitschko was a ‘April Fools’ Day joke?
Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012 3:35:10 by Imran Shaukat KhanFormer undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Lennox Lewis, recently created a buzz among the boxing fans by passing on a flattering statement, in which he confirmed that he has decided to come out of retirement to fight Vitali Klitschko, the current WBC heavyweight champion, in a long awaited rematch. However, the announcement was nothing more than a cruel April fool’s joke and certainly it has not been liked by many out there.
Lennox stated, “After a 9 year absence from the ring, former heavyweight king Lennox Lewis will return to the ring in what could be one of the most anticipated rematches in boxing history. Lennox will square off for the second time with current heavyweight champ, Vitali Klitschko in Hamburg, Germany on September 29th for Klitschko’s WBC heavyweight title.” – LennoxLewis.com.
The Lion, Lewis, who held a record of winning 41 of his 44 professional fights (1 Draw), with 32 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, fought with Vitali at the Staples Center in Las Angeles, California in 2003.
The highly anticipated bout, which had the Lineal WBC/IBO/The Ring heavyweight titles on the line, was won by Lewis via TKO. Vitali was leading Lewis on all scorecards but the fight ended after he suffered a severe cut above his eye.
Nevertheless, when Vitali demanded for a rematch, Lewis refused him and later on walked away from the sport. Therefore, almost everyone out there still wants Lewis to get back and offer Vitali a rematch but there hopes have been turned down, as Lewis has sadly confirmed that it was nothing but a joke.
“Lennox returns to the ring for Sept. 29th mega fight with Klitschko,” wrote Lennox via his Twitter account.
Well, all said and done, Lewis is six years older than Vitali, which means that the Ukrainian will certainly have an edge over the pugilist specialist, if they ever meet in the ring.
