The Foreign Ministry of Pakistan has made it clear to the United States that it should provide solid evidences against Hafiz Mohammad Saeed so that a legal process could be initiated against the founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
These official comments from Foreign Office surfaced after visiting US Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides called on Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani.
Sources have claimed that Nides raised the issue of Hafiz Saeed during his meetings, where Gilani reminded US that it had to respect Pakistan’s red lines regarding its territorial sovereignty and integrity. Statements from the Foreign Office and the US Embassy did not confirm or deny the claims.
“In a democratic country like Pakistan, where the judiciary is independent, evidence against anyone must withstand judicial scrutiny,” said the spokesman at the Foreign Office when approached for comment.
“There was no doubt that Pakistan would prefer to receive concrete evidence to proceed legally.”This would be so much better than engaging in public discussion,” the spokesman added further.
Earlier on Monday, US Secretary of State Wendy Sherman made an announcement in New Delhi that the United States of America was putting a 10 million US dollar bounty for the founder of LeT Hafiz Saeed.
“The US was also told that if either they or India were really serious then they should not shy away from providing Pakistan with concrete evidence so that the law could take its own course,” said another FO official.
