Has the iPhone 4S really turned into a 4G device? – The real story unveiled – Part 1
Friday, April 6th, 2012 6:25:48 by Usman KhalidWith the release of the new iPad, 2012 version, Apple, Inc. has released an update to the iOS 5, the 5.1. The important thing is that it is compatible to every iOS device that could run iOS 4 or iOS 5.
However, the new update has given iPhone 4S users a new problem to deal with, mentally. After the update to iOS 5.1 the AT&T users are now experiencing a bittersweet sensation because the 3G notification has now been replaced with 4G moniker.
The confusion is that iPhone was marketed as a 3G device not as a 4G smartphone and the change overnight has given birth to many urban legend stories.
However, as the sensation is neither good nor bad, the explanation to it is the same. Since the release of the new iPad that embraces 4G LTE for the first time in Apple’s history, one of carriers, AT&T have started marketing iPhone 4S as a 4G device. The answer to your question is yes and no, if you are asking the question.
The device runs on AT&T’s HSPA+ network, which is merely an upgrade to its traditional 3G network. That said, AT&T’s claim that the iPhone 4S uses technology that is three times faster than its traditional 3G network, is true.
But it’s still way slower than the 4G LTE network that the new iPad uses. It’s also considerably slower than even more advanced versions of HSPA+. The iPhone 4S supports 14.4 Mbps HSPA+. Meanwhile, there are two faster versions of HSPA+ that offer theoretical network download speeds of 21 Mbps and 42 Mbps.
