Chanderpaul vigil takes West Indies past 400

Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 25th test century guided West Indies past 400 in their first innings of the first test match against Australia at the Kensington Oval. The home side eventually declared their innings at 449/9 with Chanderpaul staying not-out
on 103 and Devendra Bishoo on 18.

Adrian Barath and Kraigg Brathwaite opened the innings for the Windies and added 38 for the first wicket before the former fell for 22. Brathwaite and Kirk Edwards took the score to 142 before Edwards gifted David Warner his first test wicket to leave the
hosts at 142/2. Brathwaite’s 199-ball vigil finally came to an end when he lost his focus after lunch on the first day for 57.

Darren Bravo and Chanderpaul took the score to 240 before Bravo fell for 51. Narsingh Deonarine made a quick-fire 21 and Darren Sammy 41 to increase the rate of scoring in order to put the Aussies into bat. The hosts finally managed to make 449 from 153
overs.

Ryan Harris and Warner picked up two wickets each while Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle, Nathan Lyon and Shane Watson picked up one wicket apiece.

Australia came out to play the 9.5 overs and openers Ed Cowan and Warner stayed unbeaten with 13 and 27 to their names respectively. The Kangaroos were 44/0 at the close of play on Day 2, still trailing by 405 runs.

The Day 3 action will resume on Monday, April 9.
