Burning Karachi
Monday, April 9th, 2012 3:32:19 by Faisal FarooqIt has been ages since Karachi, the provincial metropolis city of Sindh, is burning, whether it is ethnic violence or political parties’ disputes, the city burns for any reason.
It doesn’t matter it burns major or minor. Many analysts believe that the PPP-led coalition government and its allies are equally responsible for the massacre in the business hub of the country.
Many political parties of Sindh are based on ethnic groups and the past is witness that these groups have never resolved any issue to their own supporters yet the so called educated people of Karachi don’t learn any lesson and support these ethnic groups time and again.
As Karachi is a diverse city, things have modified severely in the latest decade. Karachi is target of people from all the places of Pakistan who want to find better opportunities.
At the same time, people bring their culture, religion and ethnic zeal along with them to the newly moved city. However, we have failed to educate ourselves to bear this reality.
What we learned is to second our ethnic groups and remain alienated. One will easily put all the blame to the other party when anyone opens this debate to inquire one group.
In the present scenario, no political party is ready to take responsibility of the mercy killing of innocent people of Karachi.
The recent wave of target killing made me think what was fault of victimized people? Why any would kill an educated professional, a hawker and a bus driver, who were never involved in any political activities. The question is that what changed after their killings?
When we take a look in the military operation carried out against a specific group in 90s, we cannot understand the situation. The same group is holding major seats in the provincial metropolis presently.
People are demanding another military operation but the question is that how are we going to support ethnic groups and parties?
Will we ever actualize that backing ethnic groups can never unit people in the most populated city of the country. In order to resolve the situation, we will have to take stand against all these groups without any discrimination.
