In order to reduce the intensity of ongoing energy crisis, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani proposed a uniform loadshedding process across the country and a legislation to put a check on power pilferage.

While briefing the media about the decisions taken at the national energy conference held under his chair, he observed, “Both short and long-term measures are being adopted to overcome the power crisis in the country”.

The premier, flanked by five chief ministers as well as Finance Minister Syed Naveed Qamar and Prime Minister Azad Jammu and Kashmir Chaudhry Majeed, informed the media that it had been decided that the government offices would work five days a week.

In his view, this step would result in saving 700MW electricity. Instead of advancing the clocks by one hour, office timings would be adjusted to minimize use of electricity in summer season, he added.

Gilani also announced that markets and business centers across the country would be closed at 8 PM except for Saturdays. Stressing on the need of legislation to put a curb on pilferage, he said abrupt steps would be taken to stop country-wide power theft.

While answering a query, the premier vowed that all out efforts were being made to resolve the energy crisis, as the incumbent inherited the issue of circular debt and the country witnessed a massive boost in gas demand.

In a bid to bridge the gap, Gilani said that the government was working on several power generation projects including wind, hydro electricity, solar, nuclear and other alternate resources. He also said that talks with India on import of electricity were also underway.

Gilani showed commitment to resolve the power-related complaints of Punjab saying these would be accordingly addressed and the government would continue to provide relief to the lifeline users.

Earlier, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif in his inaugural speech spoke on worsening energy situation in the country, particularly in his province.

While proposing one-window operation at Prime Minister House to solve problems of power generation, he suggested various measures in order to overcome energy crisis.
