Prime Minister’s son leaves country after Supreme Court’s notice

The son of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani, Ali Musa, has left Pakistan after the Supreme Court issued him a notice in a case related to alleged irregularities in the import of a large amount of the chemical Ephedrine, commonly known as
“poor man’s cocaine”. Media reports said Ali Musa’s move could be related to efforts by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) to put his name on the Exit Control List, which has the names of people barred from travelling outside Pakistan.

Ali Musa, who was recently elected to the National Assembly or lower house of parliament, has left for South Africa and is also expected to travel to Britain, his personal secretary told The Express Tribune. The secretary said it was a “scheduled visit”
and Ali Musa was likely to return on May 2.

Both father and son are under the stern gaze of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had been repeatedly asking the Prime Minister of the country to write to the Swiss probe in order to re start an investigation in which the President of the country, Asif Ali Zardari was named as being involved with money laundering.
However, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani had blatantly refused the orders of the Supreme Court of the country for which Yousuf Raza Gilani was tried and found guilty of being in contempt of court.

The investigation against Asif Ali Zardari was made to come to halt by the signing of the National Reconciliation Ordinance that was signed by Bhutto during the time that the President of the country was Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf. However, the apex court
of the country had deemed the NRO as illegal that in effect called for the re starting of the investigation against Asif Ali Zardari.

However, the government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party had resisted writing to the Swiss probe by giving the argument that the President of the country enjoyed legal immunity both within as well as outside the country under the constitution
of Pakistan. Therefore, according to the Prime Minister, the act of writing to the Swiss probe would be unconstitutional.
