Sugar Ray Leonard says Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao is beyond money

The fight between the five-division world champion, Floyd Mayweather junior, and the eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao, is one of the most eagerly awaited fights out there but it has not been made as of yet and the main reason behind is money. However, Boxing’s great, Sugar Ray Leonard, believes the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao is for history and not for money.

The 55-year-old legend, who is more commonly known as Sugar, has implored both pugilists to fight, for the sake of their own legacies.

“More than damaging to boxing, it’s damaging to their legacy,” five-weight world champion Leonard told BBC Sport.

“This is for history, for people to say ‘I remember when’. It’s beyond money.”

“Boxing is always taking black eyes, but this is the longest boxing has taken a black eye for,” said Leonard, who fought and beat Hagler 25 years ago on Friday.

Leonard, former five-weight world champion, beats the likes of Wilfred Benitez, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler during his boxing career. All these boxers are ‘International Boxing Hall of Fame’ inductees and perhaps this is a reason why Leonard thinks that he had a lot more competition than Mayweather or Pacquiao.

He remarked, “From the 1990s back to the 1960s, there were great fighters, there was an abundance of talent. Now you just hear about Pacquiao and Mayweather.”

They are amazing guys who could have dealt with the guys in our era, but they’ve got to do what’s best for themselves, and I don’t mean financially.”

The undefeated American superstar, Mayweather junior, is currently set to face Miguel Cotto on May 5 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada whereas Manny Pacquiao will take on Timothy Bradley on June 9 at the same venue.

Well, all said and done, let’s hope Mayweather and Pacquiao somehow agree to each other because people desperately want to see who the best pound-for-pound king is.
