Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) and cricketer turned politician, Imran Khan has claimed that his party is ready to take on the two mainstream political parties of the country, Pakistan Muslim League (N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the
upcoming general elections, which are expected to be held later in 2012 or early 2013.
Since the last couple of decades, PPP and PML (N) are dominating the political scene of Pakistan and are without doubt the two major political forces in the country.
Imran formed PTI in mid-1990s but his party failed to make an impression for a number of years and the political analysts used to label PTI as a ‘Taanga Party’, which meant that the people of Pakistan did not know any other leader in the party apart from
Imran himself.
Since last eight years, Imran has slowly but gradually gained popularity amongst the educated class of the country but his party failed to emerge as a major force. However, things changed drastically for PTI in 2011 after massive public processions of the
party in Lahore and Karachi.
Since then, a number of political heavy-weights in Pakistan have joined PTI and now most of the analysts believe that it has emerged as the third major political party of Pakistan and it is going to give a tough time to the orthodox parties, who have their
roots all across the country.
However, it remains to be seen that PTI is able to compete with PPP and PML (N) in the electoral politics but the Chairman PTI is confident that his party is now experienced enough to compete with the major parties.
Pakistan is currently going through a lot of problems at the domestic as well as international front. The present government has miserably failed to deliver the goods for the masses of the country. There is no doubt about the fact that Pakistan needs a strong
and honest government after the next elections. However, at the present moment, it is likely that no party will get a clear majority in the National Assembly.
Majority of the youth and the educated people of Pakistan feel that Imran Khan is the only honest political leader in the country who can change the fortunes of Pakistan with a fresh vision. It remains to be seen that ‘Imran’s Tsunami’ can hit the shores
of Pakistan’s political scene during the electoral process or not.
