How to detect and remove Flashback malware from Mac OS X – Part 1
Thursday, April 12th, 2012 3:52:16 by Usman KhalidSince Apple’s beloved operating system, Mac OS X is under attacker, especially the versions after 2010, that would be Snow Leopard and last year’s Lion. The malware that has become the pain in Apple circles is infamous for the alias, Flashback that attacks the operating system on weak point of Java vulnerability in the web browsers like Safari and FireFox.
However, the security company F-Secure has designed a method for the users’ ease to detect and remove the malware from the operating system.
But first the reasons because of which it made its way to operating system that until now had been tipped as one of the most secure operating systems in the world.
In this particular instance, the weak point that malware writers were targeting was Java, a technology Apple hasn’t included out of the box on its computers since 2010, but that it supports with its own releases. The runtime is used from anything from enterprise applications to popular 3D games like Minecraft. In November 2010, when announcing plans for the OpenJDK project, Apple said it would continue to maintain these versions through Lion, but that Java SE 7 and beyond would be handled and distributed by Oracle.
Initially this malware was only an OS X installer file that was disguised as Flash Player, but in February of this year, another variant of this malware was found that attempts to take advantage of Java security holes to install without requiring user interaction or being detected.
