Prime Minister comes to defend his son Ali Musa Gilani
Thursday, April 12th, 2012 9:42:30 by Faisal FarooqTerming media hype as a malicious campaign against his son Ali Musa Gilani over his alleged involvement in a chemical quota case, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani took his cabinet into confidence.
The cabinet expressed solidarity with the premier over the matter. Addressing to his colleagues, Gilani said that probes conducted by various departments made no mention of influence exercised by his son in the conclusions.
He observed, “The Chairman of Senate Standing Committee on Interior constituted another committee consisting of a joint team of experts of FIA, Chairman of Quality Control and Federal Inspector Drugs to ascertain the substance used by pharmaceutical companies in the country. The report of this committee has also reached the same conclusions with no mention of Syed Ali Musa Gilani”.
He continued that a joint investigation committee constituted by former health minister was tasked to establish the violation of the procedure in granting quota to the recipients and that team, too, found no evidence of his son’s involvement in the case.
According to a press statement, Ephedrine, the drug in question, is to be dealt with under the Drug Act 1976 and not under Control of Narcotics Substance Act 1977 because it is a locally-manufactured, controlled chemical, distributed yearly by the Ministry of Health under Drug Act 1976.
The press note added that there was proof that ephedrine is converted to manufacture ecstasy or cocaine in the country. The local price of the drug is about Rs7, 000 per kg and the figure of billions of rupees is a witting attempt to delude the nation.
Recalling the recent past, Gilani said that his elder son, Abdul Qadir Gilani, was also impeached in the Hajj scandal earlier and later Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry directed the authorities to register a case against the MNA who leveled allegations on his son merely on the basis of hearsay.
Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan while briefing the media after the meeting said the federal Cabinet expressed solidarity with the prime minister over the issue, giving grave concern over the character assassination of the prime minister’s family members.
