Barnes and Noble launches the new Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight – Part 1

Barnes and Noble are taking the tablet competition pretty seriously and the evidence of such approach is the new upgraded Nook Simple Touch GlowLight that was launched this week. The release date however, falls somewhere in May. Pre-orders however, are in progress and the users can book the new Nook to-be-released in May for $139.

There has always been a problem with the e-readers that used e-ink as the medium for display. Though the e-ink-based devices have always been the best choice for reading in day light even in bright sunlight, its lack of readability in the dark has always been its weakness.

With GlowLight, what Barnes and Noble’s department for electronic devices has done is that the tablet has been given the capability of display in the darkness with frontlit LEDs. So far there had been no tablets with e-ink, whatsoever, that had this feature.

The best option available in the market had been the covers and stand-on LED lamps to able the users to read in the darkness but even that had its problems with mobility, which has been the bread and butter of the contemporary tablet culture.

The Nook Simple Touch, as the name suggests, it’s a touch screen tablet that runs e-ink in its electronic veins. In addition to being an e-reader, the device has the capability of web browsing and emailing. However, book reading has always been the device’s forte.

The touch has been made more sensitive as compared to last year’s model and some ounces have been shaved off the new successor, 6 percent, to be exact, weighing 6.95 ounces.

As Jamie Iannone, president of Digital Products at Barnes & Noble, demoed the device, he pointed out that the light actually fades on — and also fades off. He said that was something he requested, explaining that he didn’t want it to be too jarring when people turned the light on in the dark.
