New Delhi : (Monday, April 16, 2012) India is likely to join the faction of countries with intercontinental missile technology this week as it is to hold its first ever test flight of a new long-range rocket. According to the sources,
this yet to be tested missile is nuclear capable.
According to The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the new missile, named Agni-V missile, is scheduled to be tested somewhere between Wednesday to Friday. This missile has a reported range of over 5000 kilometers
(31,000 miles).
Sharing details of this new missile experiment, Ravi Gupta, the DRDO spokesman said that the launch date was flexible as it was the India’s longest-range missile and therefore a number of logistics issues were to be taken care
of.
This new missile, which is aimed at depicting the growing might of Indian military, is planned to be launched and fired from coastal range in the eastern state of Orissa.
Gupta further said, “Agni-V is a 5,000-plus kilometer range missile and it is to meet our present-day threat perceptions, which are determined by our defence forces and other agencies.”
The planned launch is being executed after India successfully experimented its Agni-IV missile that is capable of travelling over 35,000 kilometers.
India, that is among the top ten military spenders in the world, traditionally sees its neighbouring Pakistan and China as its prime external threats.
