Supreme Court of Pakistan rejects Aitzaz Ahsan’s request on Gilani case

The Supreme Court recently rejected the request of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s counsel, Aitzaz Ahsan, to postpone the announcement of the verdict in the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case. Apart from that, the Supreme Court
also adjourned the hearing of the contempt case against Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani till Tuesday.

The Prime Minister’s counsel Aitezaz Ahsan, expressed himself on the matter by making the following statements: “Learning from the example of Raymond Davis who was taken away by the Americans, we should not submit our president to the foreign magistrate
on our own because it is the cause of the people. Overlook the fact that Asif Zardari is president today; if we allow setting the dangerous precedence today, tomorrow a magistrate of any country will summon our president, the chief justice or even the army
chief.”

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani was asked by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to write to the Swiss probe in order to re start an investigation in which the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari was named for being involved in a money laundering
case along with his deceased wife Benazir Bhutto. However, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani did not comply with the orders of the Supreme Court stating that the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari enjoyed complete immunity both within and
outside the country.

The case which the Supreme Court of Pakistan has been urging the government of the country ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party to re start came to a stop by the signing of the National Reconciliation Ordinance during the time that the President of the country
was Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf. However, the apex court of the country had deemed the NRO as illegal which in effect called for the re starting of the investigation.

During the last hearing, the prime minister’s counsel, while avoiding domestic immunity, had claimed international immunity for President Asif Ali Zardari “as long as he (Zardari) is the president”. The apex court had also directed Aitzaz counsel to complete
his evidence by Wednesday, April 18.
