The virus of this disease spread by direct person to person contact, or contact with infected mucus or phlegm from the nose or mouth and contact with infected feces.
In this disease virus enters through the mouth and nose and spread through the blood and lymph system. Usually this infection occurs in those groups of people who have not been vaccinated. In this disorder disability is much more common than death. In this disorder breathing problems can also occur.
Causes
This disease is caused by infection with the poliovirus. Poliovirus is a small RNA virus that is spread through contact with the oral mucosa such as mouth, nose, etc. This virus spread from the gastrointestinal tract to nervous system and causes paralytic disease. There are many other causes of this disease like lack of immunization against polio and travel to an area that has experienced a polio outbreak.
Symptoms
There are a lot many symptoms of this disease such as general discomfort or uneasiness (malaise), headache, slight fever, red throat, sore throat and vomiting.
Some other symptoms are back pain or backache, diarrhea, excessive tiredness, fatigue, headache, irritability, leg pain, moderate fever, muscle stiffness, neck pain and stiffness, pain in front part of neck, skin rash or lesion with pain and pain or stiffness of the back, arms, legs, abdomen. Spasm and muscle tenderness and in any area of the body is also the symptom of poliomyelitis.
Treatment
Antibiotics can b use to treat this disease. Medications such as bethanechol used for urinary retention. Moist heat like heating pads, warm towels are use to reduce muscle pain and spasms.
Painkillers are also helpful to reduce headache, muscle pain, and spasms. Physical therapy, corrective shoes or braces and orthopedic surgery use to help recover muscle strength and function.
