Differences reportedly have been emerged between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and Vice-chairman Shah Mehmood over the upcoming party’s elections.

According to the media reports the cricket-turned politician rebuffed the proposed outline of the party structures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab after Javed Hashmi and old guards expresses reservations.

In a bid to hold fair party elections, Shah Mehmood Qureshi was assigned a task to form regional steering committees in the above mentioned provinces. The party chief has also dissolved the existing regional bodies in the region.

Javed Hashmi and other old stalwarts, however, raised questions over the framework which appeared to give precedence to a majority of news party workers, inducted from other parties.

Hashmi reportedly observed, “It will be unfair with the old guard of the party, as they should not be ignored at all”.

In order to make the situation clear, Imran Khan formed a Supreme Council comprising Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Javed Hashmi General Dr Arif Alvi and Additional Secretary General Saifullah Niazi.

The newly-formed body will discuss the issues raised from the dissatisfaction of old party workers, who were not happy with inclusion of recently-joint party workers in the regional steering committees.

A media report quoting a senior party official commented, “Genuine resentment among senior party workers is growing,” observed a member of the council, adding that PTI Punjab President Mian Azhar is amongst those who are resentful of the shakeup”.

He was of the opinion that old PTI activists have strong belief that the newly inductions do not value the ideological workers.  The issue will be discussed in the upcoming meeting as it will damage credibility of the party, he added.

According to some analysts, Hashmi’s role will be significant in the coming days due to his fame in the politics. Another reason of resentment between the key leaders was that Qureshi wants divide the party into parts.

However, the old guards of the party were not ready to doing so.  Imran has also replaced Sindh party president Nadir Khan Leghari with Naeemul Haq, who, according to party leaders, made no progress in Sindh.

The decision, however, was taken through a nomination process, not an election.
