Labor Party suspends membership of Lord Nazir Ahmed
Monday, April 16th, 2012 9:31:31 by Faisal FarooqLord Nazir Ahmed, the Kashmiri-origin member of British Parliament, disowned the allegations against him, saying he had never announced a bounty on George W Bush and Barrack Obama.
The British Labor Party suspended his membership condemning his remarks about world leaders.
The party spokesperson, in a statement issued on Sunday, said it utterly condemns these remarks which are totally unacceptable if these comments were accurate.
It observed, “The international community is rightly doing all in its power to seek justice for the victims of the Mumbai bombings and halt terrorism. His membership was suspended due to the statement regarding US Presidents Barrack Obama and George W. Bush”.
According to the spokesperson an investigation regarding the remarks would be carried out by the party.
Speaking to the media, Lord Nazir rejected the allegations saying he did not announce any bounty on US President instead he made a demand for an action against killers of innocent people in Iran.
Replying to a query, he clarified that he did not utter those words what were quoted by theh media.
He commented, “I did not offer a bounty. I said that there have been war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan and those people who have got strong allegations against them – George W Bush and Tony Blair have been involved in illegal wars and should be brought to justice”.
He also said that Labor party officials had not contacted him before announcing the suspension saying, “They have suspended me? That’s a surprise to me. I did not know. I do not think there’s anything wrong with that”.
He clarified that he would deal with the party if it wants to suspend his membership. In his view, the party will have to produce some solid evidence in this regard.
In 2009, Lord Ahmed was jailed after he was caught sending and receiving text messages at the wheel, minutes before he was involved in a fatal crash on the M1. He was released after serving 16 days when the Court of Appeal decided his prison sentence should be suspended.
Pakistan born Lord Ahmed was made Britain’s first Muslim peer in 1998 and is no stranger to controversy. In 2007 he criticised Tony Blair’s decision to award author Salman Rushdie a Knighthood, saying he had “blood on his hands”.
