Security agencies blamed for Bannu jailbreak

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Home Ministry dispatched a preliminary investigation report to Bannu jailbreak incident to the Federal Interior Ministry, accusing the police officials and security agencies for a major intelligence failure.

In the meantime, the Chief Minister (KPK) has removed IG Jails, Commissioner Bannu, Deputy Superintendent Jail and DIG Police from their posts over the prison-break incident.

On Sunday, as many as 150 militants ambushed Bannu jail with rockets and automatic weapons, enabling over 384 prisoners to escape from different barracks.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers came in 25 vehicles and carried out operation until two operations. The police, despite presence of three police stations in the surroundings, could not reach the crime site in good time.

The report asked the federal interior ministry to hold an extensive probe, terming the incident a failure of intelligence.

The broke away prisoners included 269 convicted, 89 under trail while 21 were handed over death penalties.

Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the KPK Information Minister informed the media about high profile prisoners including one Adnan Rasheed who was allegedly involved in an attack of former president Pervez Musharraf.

Terming it a well-coordinated attack, the minister said a probe would be conducted into the prison-break and the late arrival of the police force to help the jail authorities in countering the assault.

According to the reports, the attackers ambushed the jail with hand grenades, rockets and continued firing.

Security personnel of the prison, the local police and other law enforcement agencies deployed in the area didn’t show stiff resistance to counter the terrorist attack during over one-and-a-half hours of action. The militants also set on fire the jail record during the ambush.

According to the authorities, the law enforcement agencies reached in the morning when the attackers had managed to cross the city.

According to the police sources, raids were conducted in Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Karak and other districts for the arrest of the escaped prisoners, but to no avail.
