However, due to the constraints of the device dimensions—as the gadgets are becoming more and more slim—the physical keyboards are almost out of question.
Though virtual keyboards are very responsive and have no lag whatsoever, the lack of getting bearings on the keys due to flat, coherent and uniform surface. Most of the people just do not see the keyboard while typing, and it becomes very difficult to type in the start. However, after regular use, the users tend to get used to the virtual keyboard.
However, there are some other concerns that have haunted the virtual keyboards since the advent of the smartphone in late 90s. Due to limited size of the screen, all the buttons are so cramped up inside such a small being—keyboard—that the user sometimes tend to make mistakes while typing. In addition, the front-side buttons like Home, Return and Menu standard buttons have now become capacitive in nature, replacing physical keys at the bottom of the screens.
These capacitive touch sensitive keys are prone to inadvertent use while typing on the keyboard. Mostly, the home button is placed right beneath where the space bar of the virtual keyboard comes. This allows accidental pressing of home button sometimes as the spacebar is the most used key on the keyboard.
This brings a negative impression on the user and now that Google has launched a new version of its mobile operating system Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.
