Google to shut off a number of services in coming days
Saturday, April 21st, 2012 5:39:06 by Usman KhalidSince Larry Page took the reins at Google as its CEO last year, he has been working on one target, how to shave off the operating and fixed costs of the company. The technology giant, though is one of the powerful both in Silicon Valley and the world, has been after saving money for the rainy day.
Therefore, taking the advantage of spring cleaning, the CEO has announced to pull the plug on a number of services in the coming fall.
The full list of the services that the company is planning to shut down is available on the official Google blog but important ones that it already had shut or is planning to are the following.
- No more support for Google Sync for BlackBerry, starting June 1.
- The mobile Web app for Google Talk is being shut down.
- Starting today, the Picasa Web Albums Uploader for Mac and Picasa Web Albums Plugin for iPhoto will no longer be available to download.
- No more updates for Picasa for Linux.
- The Google Flu Vaccine Finder has been retired. Anyone interested in this is being redirected to the HealthMap Flu Vaccine Finder.
The Google devout, who use the aforementioned services on a regular basis are expected to have a turn off from the company but Matthias Schwab, director of Cloud Services at Google, tired to explain the bigger picture in a blog post that “making changes to products or services is hard, but we do need to maintain our focus if we are to do important things that matter in the world.”
A goal here, Schwab continued, is to improve the overall user experience for Google users. Thus, less really could be more in this case if Google can dedicate more resources to bigger projects, like Google+ and Google Play (and maybe even Google Drive), and make them better over the course of the next year.
