These mountains are home to a wide variety of habitats, including temperate flora with greater number of endemic species in the world.

The forest destruction caused by commercial agriculture is a major threat to the region, since it generates half of the agricultural products used by American consumers.

This place is also seriously threatened by the expansion of urban areas, pollution and road construction, factors credited to California as one of the four states with the country’s deteriorating ecology. At present, retained about 10% of the original vegetation
intact.
