Google may save Chromebook in Motorola Mobility acquisition
Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 4:32:21 by Usman KhalidGoogle has been taking Chromebook along with it for a year or so but the device has failed to receive considerable attention even though Google re-tweaked the Chrome OS recently.
The Chromebook adventure is about near its end, according to some experts. However, about-to-accomplish Motorola Mobility acquisition by Google may offer a solution to beleaguering enterprise.
Motorola release Atrix, Android-based smartphone last year with a docking function that could turn Motorola-built Lapdock into an Android-based laptop. AT&T for one marketed it as an astonishing achievement by Motorola. However, the Lapdock failed to get the warm reception in the market as well.
As a result Motorola altered both the Lapdock and its marketing and pricing strategies. TechRepublic’s Jason Hiner explains the new strategy by Motorola as:
“While the original Lapdock was thin, slick, and brushed metallic, the Lapdock 500 Pro had a more utilitarian look in the mode of a MacBook Pro or a business-class HP laptop. Most importantly, Motorola finally got the price right. The original Lapdock was $499. Motorola sells the Lapdock 500 for $349, but the price at Amazon and other retailers is $249. Verizon regularly sells it for $149 when a customer buys it with a Motorola smartphone.”
Google’s Chrome project developed into a three-fold enterprise in the last couple of years. Starting as a web browser, the software morphed into a netbook-based operating system, which was a flop because it still gave the look of a web browser pretending to be an operating system. However, Google changed its outlook to a more OS-like guise. Then came Chromebook in 2011, which was an utter failure.
However, this does not mean it’s over. The Motorola Mobility acquisition actually offers a window of opportunity to Google. With a Motorola Atrix-like device, Google could release a new Lapdock adorning the Google Chrome OS. The Android OS is its sister operating system and the amalgamation would be buttery smooth.
Some tout that the Lapdock/Chrome OS/Android combination will be elusive but corporations will be interested in marketing it as all pieces fall into place.
