Remembering legendary Moin Akhtar
Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 3:31:00 by Faisal FarooqFirst death anniversary of legendary Moin Akhtar, one of the most beloved comedians, hosts and actors ever to grace the stage and television screens of the country, was observed across the country on Sunday.
He was an inspiration for the generations to come, one of the few who stands out so distinguishably and a personality who still lives in hearts of millions even after his death.
Besides a man of many voices and talents, there was no one like him in the annals of Pakistani comedy, and it’s unlikely that there will be in the future.
The legendary personality carved himself a place in the hearts of Pakistanis for generations to come through whatever it was his stand-up act, hosting a show or the litany of impersonations he did.
He had a comedic range that will surely never be matched in the country. Both the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and the Pride of Performance was awarded to him by the government.
However, the true measure of his genius is being observed by the emptiness we all feel at the occasion of his first death anniversary.
He made his professional debut from a TV show in 1966 and it wasn’t long before he became the dynamic and versatile performer that millions know and are missing in today.
The dynamic figure single handedly brought a new brand of comedy to Pakistani stages that has not been seen before, starring in performances including Rozy, Dollar Man, 47, Half Plate, Family-93, Eid Train, Bandar Road Se Kemari, and Fifty-Fifty.
The troika of Anwar Maqsood, Bushra Ansari and Moin Akhtar gave rise to a golden of Pakistani comedy for many years.
In a talk-show namely Loose Talk, which started in 2005, Akhtar appeared as a different character in each and every of more than 400 parts.
However, there was more to him than his ability to lampoon politicians or his uncanny impersonations of public personalities. Those who knew him always spoke of his incredible generosity and grace as a human being.
He never lost the sense of where he came from and where he belonged despite his wide and large fame. Besides appreciating the small things, he never misses a chance to help those he could in any form.
His loss a year ago left a void in the heart of the country that is unlikely to be filled. But he’s left behind a body of work that is as timeless as the spirit which he embodied.
A true national treasure, Moin Akhtar left us far too soon, but he left us with a gift that keeps on giving — Laughter.
