Mix reactions from experts over conviction of Prime Minister Gilani
Thursday, April 26th, 2012 11:55:38 by Faisal FarooqA mix-type of reaction was surfaced from analysts and experts have given their opinion regarding the conviction of Prime Minster Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani by the Supreme Court in the contempt case.
A seven-member bench of the Supreme Court found Prime Minister Gilani guilty of contempt on Thursday, sentencing him ‘till the rising of the court’ for declining to write a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
Terming the decision of the Supreme Court to convict the Prime Minister as adequate, former judge, Justice Wajih-ud-Din has said that the decision of Supreme Court was a respectable penalty.
The former judge and currently member of the PTI disregarded the amount of sentence, saying that the quantum of penalty does not matter; a conviction is a conviction. The implementation of the decision was also speedy as the court was able to implement the decision in the court room then and there, he added.
About future of the premiership, he said that the detailed judgment remains to be seen as to whether Article 63(2) pertaining to referring the matter to Speaker of National Assembly or automatic disqualification will be invoked.
In his view, there has been no precedent where a Prime Minister is charged with contempt of court and any public servant, who has any allegation him is immediately asked to vacate his office.
However, renowned journalist and anchor-person Najam Sethi said, “Prime Minister convicted under section 5 of contempt act and not 63-1 (g) as propagated by channels. Disqualification for five years will not be automatic”.
Farough Nasim, Senator of MQM termed the decision of Supreme Court as just, labeling it as a writing on the wall.
Another political pundit, Sheikh Rashid termed the decision as expected, saying that the premier’s work is over and he should now concentrate on his son’s cases and hearings. He also said that looking out for a new Prime Minister will result in political instability.
Another journalist and columnist, Omar Qureshi, said that this was the end of the road for the Prime Minster while Nadeem F. Paracha ? took a different view, terming it as a start of a new journey for Prime Minister.
