The Lucky One is a 2012 romantic drama which is based on Nicholas Sparks’ 2008 novel of the same name. It stars Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Jay R. Fergusson and Blythe Danner and is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The 100-minute flick follows US Marine Sergeant Logan Thibault (played by Efron) who came back to home from his third tour of duty in Iraq with a photograph he found of a woman he doesn’t even know. He credits her photograph for keeping him alive and after
learning her name is Beth (Schilling) and address, Thaibault shows up at her home and take a job at her family-run kennel. Soon both fell in love with each other, giving hop for Thaibult that Beth can be more than his good luck charm.
The movie received poor ratings and terrible reviews from critics worldwide. The review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes report 20 per cent rotten rating based on 109 reviews, with an average rating of 4.3 out of 10. The site’s general consensus states,
“While it provides the requisite amount of escapist melodrama, The Lucky One ultimately relies on too many schmaltzy clichés to appeal to anyone not already familiar with the Nicholas Sparks formula.”
Newark Star Ledger’s top film critic, Stephen Whitty, gave the Lucky One two out of four and stated, “There’s not much to the movie besides handsome sets, sun-dappled photography and a plot as predictable as the verse in a Hallmark card.”
Rafer Guzman, a film critic at the Newsday, gave the film a poor rating of 1.5 out of four. He commented, “The overheated eroticism could have at least made for a camp classic, but the film’s chilling narcissism ultimately makes for a pleasure less fantasy.”
