Samsung getting ahead of Nokia
Friday, April 27th, 2012 11:37:26 by Farasat AliSamsung has defeated Nokia, world’s leader handset maker, for the first time according to the sales figures reported during the first quarter. The Finnish company occupied had maintained their position since 1998 but the rise of
smartphones and Nokia’s continued difficulties to adapt to the changes have precipitated the end of his domain.
According to consultancy Strategy Analytics, Samsung sold 93.5 million phones as compared to 82.7 million Nokia between January and March . Apple came third with 35 million iPhones sold. In the competitive segment of smart phones,
Samsung sold 44 million units in the first three months, more than the triple that Nokia put only 11.9 million phones.
The news coincides with the launch of Samsung’s record results, which doubled their profits between January and March to the 5,150 million dollars. Nokia, on the other hand, presented disastrous results last week, with over 1,500
million euros of losses and a decline in sales of 29%.
Samsung is getting stronger than ever. Their new range of Galaxy smartphones, all based upon Google’s operating system- Andriod, has been the only one capable of dealing with Apple’s iPhone so far.
Samsung sold five million units of the Galaxy Note, with a 5.3 inch screen in just five monthsthier. The South Korean company is now preparing to launch Galaxy SIII next week in London.
"We hope the Galaxy SIII demand is very strong," said Robert Yi, vice president of Samsung.
The situation of Nokia may be disturbing to many analysts as their Sales of entire product line of smartphones based on Windows Phone is not meeting expectations. Nokia only managed to sell two million copies of their latest released
phone, Lumia.
Nokia’s revenue fell 65% in China during the last three months, selling only nine million phones compared with 24 million last year. The Android-equipped phones, cheaper and just as functional, now threatens the survival of Nokia
and question the viability of a third major ecosystem beyond Apple’s iPhone OS and Google’s Android.
Despite the success, Samsung will not be at all easy to stay in first place worldwide, especially from the third quarter. Because Apple are set to unveil iPhone 5 this year, which is earmarked as the most successful phone as compared
to it’s predecessors.
Furthermore, strong competition from Chinese manufacturers such as Huwei and ZTE, with powerful and cheap phones, will be an additional challenge.
