Friday, April 27th, 2012 4:08:20 by Imran Shaukat KhanBollywood’s laadli Zohra Sehgal, who is a film, theatre and TV personality, turned 100 yesterday and she celebrated her 100th birthday at home with her daughter and a few close friends from the artistic fraternity, as per one of her family members.
Zohra, who is considered a doyen of Indian theatre, was born in Uttar Pradesh in 1912 before the Indian cinema took place but when the industry was established, she stepped into it and provided people with a lot of entertainment and colourful things.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) named her the ‘Laadli of the Century’ in 2008 because of her contributions.
“She is the most incredible woman I have ever met and one of the finest actresses I have ever seen,” filmmaker R. Balki, who roped her in to play Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘bindaas’ mom in his 2007 film “Cheeni Kum”, told IANS.
“During the shooting of ‘Cheeni Kum’, we celebrated her birthday on the sets. She shot with us even in 42 degrees at Qutub Minar (in Delhi). She was full of life and didn’t care about the heat and went on dancing. She is awesome,” he added.
Zohra is still better than many of people of her age group as per one of the sources of the Bollywood industry.
“She is in fine health barring a few age-related complications, which are not serious, Her spirit is still high, along with her enthusiastic, articulate persona,” the source told IANS.
Zohra, who was last seen in ‘Saawariya’, made her debut as an actress back in 1946 in the ‘Dharti Ke Lal’.
She has appeared in over 20 Indian films but she is known best for her appearances in “Bhaji on the Beach” (1992), “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, “Bend It Like Beckham” (2002), “Dil Se…” (1998) and “Cheeni Kum” (2007).
Well, all said and done, Zohra Sehgal is certainly an asset for the Indian nation. May God keep her among us for many more years to come.
