Islamabad: (Monday, April 30, 2012) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani here today said that the Sharifs were trying to destabilize democracy in Pakistan. He was addressing from the floor of the Senate.
Airing his stance over the PML (N)’s demands to quit the office, Gilani said that he would not listen to the ‘Sharif Court’s’ and those calling him a convict should know that he has a full right to an appeal.
The PM was of the view that it was not him who was the real target, rather, the issue was there with the NRO. He said, “I am not the beneficiary why pick on me.”
Gilani was of the view that the only reason why he was being targeted was that he was trying to protect the constitution. He said, “If I don’t protect the constitution than I am the most popular person in the country.”
Hinting towards a third emerging political factor, Prime Minister Gilani said that the PML-N had real threat from Imran Khan as they feared that a vacuum would be created if he announced a long march before them.
Sharing his stance over the calls for his resignation, the PM said that he had no desire to remain in power and he should be de-notified if he was to be removed. “We don’t have a lust for power. We want to follow the constitution”
he added.
