First round of Ivy Bridge processors commences – Part 1
Tuesday, May 1st, 2012 1:08:12 by Usman KhalidIntel Corporation rolled out the latest CPU iteration in the shape of Ivy Bridge, however, this name cannot be found anywhere in their official labelling. The name Ivy Bridge is an internal code for Intel, much like last year’s Sandy Bridge models.
Intel has refrained this time to make bold claims about its newer processors after some underwhelming response from the users and vendors last year. However, aside from the CPU speed, the Ivy Bridge processors brings many other things to the table, some of them are eight-way Hyper-Threading, Turbo Boost 2.0, integrated USB 3.0, and native Thunderbolt support.
Two of the new features that the new line of processors bring are smaller and more efficient silicon transistors and the new HD4000 integrated graphics that boost the 3D gaming performance without the need of a dedicated graphics card.
More precise review of the new line of processors will pour in with time in the latter part of the year as Ivy Bridge desktops and laptops flood the market, but for now we have to make do with the a couple of computers that are available.
The CPU under review is Core i7 quad-core with the new Ivy Bridge processing mechanism.
One thing to clear here is that Ivy Bridge is not an entirely new line of processors from Intel, but it is a revamp of last year’s models. The processors from last year used 32 nm silicon transistors whereas the new line has incorporated 22 nm transistors, giving more processing power to the CPU in lesser footprint.
The products in discussion are Asus N56V and Origin EON17-S that use Core i7 processors but in different composition.
