Greenpeace activists raid two nuclear power plants
Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012 5:49:57 by Taimoor TariqTwo intrusions occurred a few hours apart, in two separate nuclear power plants in France.
On Wednesday morning, a Greenpeace activist was able to fly aboard a paramotor on the Bugey power plant in Saint Vulbas.
In a statement, the environmental organisation announced, “He managed to drop smoke bombs on one engine and landed inside the site.”
Greenpeace says that this action illustrates the “vulnerability of nuclear facilities in terms of aerial threat.”
The pilot was quickly identified and arrested by police and has been remanded in custody for breaching the security perimeter of the power plant. Police also arrested a second activist outside the site.
Herve Couasnon, known as ‘poète-escaladeur’ entered the precincts of the Central Nuclear Civeaux in Vienna a few hours later.
However, the reasons behind Couasnon’s exploits are unknown.
However, Greenpeace’s motivations largely lie on addressing the nuclear issue on the eve of the televised debate between Presidential nominees Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy.
“The fall of an airliner on a nuclear power plant, considered unlikely by the authorities, has never been taken into account by anyone,” says a Greenpeace activists.
However, the director of the Bugey power plant, Alain Litaudon says that “Greenpeace has demonstrated anything but flaws.”
He claims that the person who breached the facility was apprehended in just 8 minutes which clearly means that security officials showed excellence in terms of service, perfect coordination.
