Mahesh Bhatt: A franchise does give you an illusion of safety
Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012 3:44:25 by Imran Shaukat KhanThe prominent Indian film director, producer and screenwriter, Mahesh Bhatt, who is anxiously waiting for the release of his latest production ‘Jannat 2’, has insisted that sequels are a safe bet when it comes to the box office results.
‘Jannat 2’ is a sequel to the 2008 released film ‘Jannat’ but the film was titled as ‘Informer’ initially. However, later on it was named as ‘Jannat 2’.
When Bhatt was asked about it, he revealed that the film was not getting a good response from the audiences and therefore they had to change its name.
“When we called the film ‘Informer’, we got a very cold response, so we renamed it as ‘Jannat 2’. The title was not generating excitement in market. For a blockbuster mentality the opening weekend is always important. It gives you a feeling of safety. What ‘Jannat 2’ can do, ‘Informer’ would not do,” Mahesh Bhatt told PTI.
“With sequels, audience feels the second or third part is close to what they have experienced in previous film. A new face, a newcomer, or a new title is not picked up by people immediately, but if it is familiar then it works in most cases. So the safety is to take the franchise forward. A franchise does give you an illusion of safety,” he added.
In the meantime, Bhatt also commended Emraan Hashmi, who will be featured as the male lead in the film.
Bhatt stated when he introduced Emraan Hashmi at first, nobody accepted him as a hero because they thought he doesn’t look good but today he is one of the biggest Bollywood stars.
‘Jannat 2’, which will hit the cinemas this Friday, has a simple story-line. The film revolves around a hard-bitten cop and his hustling informer who is set against the murky backdrop of the arms trade in north India.
The film will feature Esha Gupta opposite to Emraan Hashmi.
