National Assembly passes resolution in favor of Seraiki province, Prime Minister Gilani
Thursday, May 3rd, 2012 4:11:18 by Faisal FarooqAmidst an intense protest and uproar from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) legislators, the National Assembly (NA) adopted resolution in favor of the creation of Southern Punjab province.
The treasury benches in another resolution also reposed confidence in Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, who was convicted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for not defying its rulings in the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case.
The today’s session was marred by angry protests from opposition benches, which already started with a delay of two hours.
The opposition legislators shouted of ‘Go Gilani, go!’ as the PML-N members tore copies of the day’s agenda to pieces, staging another noisy protest to keep up its campaign against the premier.
National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza observed, “I wish we do not revive those unethical traditions in the House. We should not undermine the supremacy of the Parliament that has been established during the last four and half years”.
The two resolutions were moved by Law Minister Farooq H Naek and were passed by the assembly. All members of the house except the PML-N voted in favor of the resolutions.
The opposition lawmakers arrived in the House with placards and wearing black armbands to protest against Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s refusal to step down.
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan sat silently in the tenth row and did not take part in the protest. Following passage of the resolutions, the session adjourned until Friday.
The Opposition Leader while speaking to the media said that the speaker should preside over the session in transparent manner. He argued that the speaker had let the premier quietly deliver a speech while the opposition members were not present in the house.
This time an important issue has been taken up without properly informing the lawmakers, he complained.
He raised a question that how the speaker had established that MNAs had voted in favor of the resolution, stating that it had been too noisy inside the National Assembly.
Explaining his stance on the creation of new federating units, he stated that the PML-N was in favor of more provinces.
