America’s Dane Reynolds prevailed comprehensively in the 15th heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that continued at the surf-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, in Wednesday, May 2.

With his win in the Round 3 heat, Reynolds advanced through into the fourth round (Round of 48) of the competition. Australia’s Mitch Crews also confirmed his place in the next round after securing runner-up place.

The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site delivered a series of enthralling battles throughout the day as the top local and international surfing talent competed against each other to remain alive in contention for the prestigious event title, along with a huge slice of the handsome prize purse and coveted ASP ranking points. The clean two-to-four foot waves on offer still had plenty of action to offer before the sun disappeared behind the horizon.

The 15th heat of Round 3 saw Reynolds take on Australia’s Mitch Crews, his compatriot Kai Otton and Brazil’s Filipe Toledo in a four-man battle to get into the next round of the competition.

Reynolds had been making waves in the sport for years now and was expected to come down hard on his rivals during the latest ASP PRIME event, especially with the conditions being so favourable. Making the most of his local knowledge of the waves, the American surfer caught a juicy wave halfway through the heat to earn an 8.73 on the score-board. Keeping the momentum going, he managed to add an additional 8.63 points to his account to get to a heat-total of 17.36 points. The heat-total proved to be a decisive one, consequently adding him to the Round 4 line-up.

Crews successfully made the Round 4 cut as well after putting on a pretty decent performance that enabled him to post a 7.50 and 5.37 on the score-board, consequently finishing with a resultant heat-total of 12.87 points.

Scoring a 5.67 and 6.23 off his best-two waves, Otton finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.90 points. Toledo finished fourth with a heat-total of 10.46 points. This resulted in the removal of both the surfers from the race for the event title.
