Legendary potter Stephen Hendry retires from snooker
Friday, May 4th, 2012 12:22:49 by Zeeshan GoharFormer seven-time World Snooker Championship winner from Scotland, Stephen Hendry has officially announced his retirement from snooker after suffering a crushing 13-2 defeat to compatriot Stephen Maguire in the quarter-finals of the 2012 World Snooker Championships.
The Golden Brain had a tremendous career and played impressively in the recent snooker season. However, he made the decision three months ago and admits he will be sad to no longer play the game professionally.
The Wonder Boy revealed he would be taking up a new role in China as ambassador for pool, as well as pursuing other business and media interests.
While speaking to the local press after his quarter-final clash, Hendry said, “I am officially retired now from tournament snooker. I made the decision about three months ago.”
Hendry, who turned professional as a 16-year-old in 1985, won his first world title in 1990, beating popular Londoner Jimmy White, to begin a period of dominance that kept him at No.1 in the rankings until 1998.
His attacking style and pure potting ability made him one of the most attractive players to watch and he bounced back in 1999 to win his seventh and final world crown.
During the past decade Hendry’s star began to wane and he was overtaken by a new generation of players including Ronnie O’Sullivan and Higgins.
The World Snooker paid tribute to the veteran potter by a standing ovation at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. He will be remembered always due to his charismatic personality and his achievements in the snooker world.
