Rehman Malik gives another deadline to assailants to surrender
Friday, May 4th, 2012 10:05:03 by Faisal FarooqAs per the expectations, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik arrived in Karachi to control the law and order situation in Liyari, giving another deadline to miscreants to lay down their arms.
Liyai, which is consider as one of the key area of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), is no-go area from last one week. Rehman Malik said that an operation by the police and rangers in the locality was unpleasant, but necessary.
A number of police officials and passer bys have been killed while scores being injured in pitched battles in Liyari, where the police have been engaged with armed criminals from last seven days.
While speaking to a joint press conference with Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, the Interior Minister said that all criminal elements had 72 hours to surrender themselves to the nearest Rangers check-posts, saying no leniency will be shown to anyone after the deadline.
While explaining some aspects of the plan to rid Liyari of violence, he said, “If during the Rangers sweep, any house from which a rocket, or grenade, or any criminal is found, it has been decided today that that house will be burnt down”.
He described steps that had been taken against miscreants, saying that they had acquired system that allows law enforcement agencies to have aerial monitoring of each street of area.
Point out the involvement of banned outfits, the minister claimed that he had concrete evidence and situation in the Liyari mirrored what they had witnessed in Swat, Malakand and other troubled areas.
He said banned outfits including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Baloch Liberation Army and other Baloch separatist organizations were involved in making the situation worse in Karachi, the business hub of the country.
He vowed he will resign from his post if it is found that the arms and ammunition recovered from the area is old.
Malik asserted that he was creating another check-post at Hub and will be clipping the unfrequented six routes, used by smugglers, while on the main road, police, rangers, FIA, customs and the coast guards will be used to increase checking.
Malik said that 36 cameras with digital lines have been ordered to be installed in Liyari over the next four days and its control will be with the police headquarters where monitoring shall take place.
