The other day, I took a trip to fortress stadium with my family and just happened to notice a t-shirt on display in a store. At first, it really did not catch my eye but when looking at it a little closer, it certainly did have something that really got me thinking.

The t-shirt had an “M” on it like similar to that used by McDonalds and underneath it, the same slogan “I’m Loving It!”, but it just wasn’t any old “M”, it was designed to be the legs of a women spread out.

Walking in any Western country, I might not have had the same impression about the shirt but I wasn’t in Canada or America, I was in Lahore, Pakistan.

Seeing how thousands of people visit this area on a daily basis, one would wonder how such things could be made available and that too, out in the open? It really does force a person to think that is this what the word “modern” means or are we just losing our religious and moral values?

The problem that Pakistan as a nation is facing at the moment is that our people, especially the younger generation, is confused on who we really are and want to be.

There is one part of the society which wears only the traditional shalwar kameez and is most of the times termed to be backward and not up-to-date with the latest fashion, which comes from that other group, wearing the skin fitting jeans and tight t-shirts.

We must realise that no matter how advance we get, how much we travel the world and how much we have become accustomed to Western living, we have to safeguard not only our religious values but our identity as Pakistani’s as well.

Being modern and open minded certainly does not mean women wearing miniskirts, it means that we choose to stay who we are and what we were born to be.
