David Hussey cites Mandeep Singh as future India player
Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 2:28:44 by Rana Nasir GhafoorKings XI Punjab David Hussey has lavished praise on Mandeep Singh for his match-winning knock against Deccan Chargers in an Indian Premier League (IPL) game on Tuesday.
Mandeep smashed an aggressive knock of 75 runs to steer his side to a challenging total of 170 runs. Although wickets kept falling at the other end, the classy batsman held his nerves and showed a lot of responsibility at the crease.
With the help of three mighty sixes and eight boundaries, he clattered 75 runs off 48 runs. In reply, the Chargers could only score 145 runs in the allotted quota of 20 overs, suffering a bitter 25-run loss.
Hussey described Mandeep as a future international player, adding that the young man has the ability to perform well in all three formats of the game.
"I thought our batters set the tone. Mandeep is going from strength to strength. I think he’s a future player in all three forms for India," Hussey said.
On his team’s classy win over Deccan, he shared, "We have two better spinners than me in the team, so more than happy with that. We haven’t played too well at home, but we hope to win the reverse fixture.”
On the other hand, Deccan skipper Kumar Sangakkara expressed disappointment over his team’s poor show and blamed his bowlers for not bowling in the right areas.
"I thought the difference today [Tuesday] was the bowling in the first four overs. It was a two-paced wicket and we bowled too short on a wicket that still had something in it for the bowlers. Kings XI showed us how to bowl and where to bowl," Sangakkara
said.
"Mandeep batted well and capitalised on the mistakes we made. It is a case of getting our basics right. In T20, you need to limit the opposition score to probably 150. We did pull things a bit but the first 12 overs cost [us] the match," the Deccan skipper
added.
Mandeep, who earned ‘Man of the Match’ award for his wonderful effort, was satisfied with his innings, saying:
"Hussey has supported us a lot. He has shown a lot of faith in me. I’m really satisfied today, as from the beginning of the tournament I wanted to stay till the 15th over, and I did it today for the team."
