Aslam Baig holds Asad Durrani responsible for disbursement of money among politicians
Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 12:36:34 by Faisal FarooqFormer military chief Gen. Aslam Baig submitted his statement to the Supreme Court in connection with the infamous Asghar Khan case, holding former ISI chief Asad Durrani responsible for disbursement of money among anti-PPP politicians.
He said that the military had nothing to do with the money as all the money was deposited in accounts run by Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). Praying the court to make him party in the case, he said it was Asad who implemented the presidential orders and he was the central figure in the case not him.
He asserted, “The money to be disbursed was deposited in ISI’s bank account not in army’s account and then ISI chief Asad Durrani opened accounts and transferred the amounts to the desired politicians”.
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed the hearing on Wednesday. The apex court is seized with a petition filed by Air Marshal (Retd) Asghar Khan some 16 years ago against the distribution of millions of rupees by the ISI among anti-PPP politicians to manipulate the 1990 elections.
According to the petition, the amount was allegedly disbursed by then army chief General Mirza Aslam Baig (Retd), former director general ISI Lt Gen. Asad Durrani (Retd) and defunct Mehran Bank chief Younis Habib.
He accused Durrani for the corruption, claiming that the ISI chief of that time was not working under him, adding that he cannot issue directives to the DG ISI for the disbursement of money among politicians.
In previous hearing, Naveeda Noor, Assistant Director (Legal) of Intelligence Bureau (IB), placed on record a sealed cover containing the accounts of the agency for the years 2008-09.
According to a report published in media, an amount of Rs270 million was taken out from the account of IB in the year of 2009 for toppling the Punjab government.
The report was opened in the courtroom and after going through it, the court directed to seal it again. The court asked director general IB to file a concise statement on spending the amount for toppling the Punjab government in the year 2009.
Later, on the request of Attorney General, the court adjourned the hearing till May 10, and directed the AG to produce the reports of Mehran Bank and Habib Bank scandals.

With so many centres of power, Pakistan can hardly be called a functioning nation. Every wing is only looking after its interests. We can only hold the politicians responsible nobody has the guts to bring to account the “jernails”. They have looted Pakistan’s coffers as much as the politicians.
