Samsung Galaxy S III: Should we welcome the 2012 model or make peace with it? – Part 1

Now that Samsung Galaxy S III is finally here, it is about time that we start digging into the details of the handset. I am well aware of the fact that there are many Galaxy S enthusiasts in every corner of the world. That revelation came more vividly last time I wrote an article on the device in which I commented on its design and specifications.

Bringing a device with the latest specs is one thing and releasing a smartphone after creating such hype with upgrades is another. Galaxy S III, was everything from attractive to latest and greatest, but for some reason it did not catch my eye as a mind blowing device.

It surely gets the latest quad-core processor, a bump in the screen size and tweaks in the design, but I would prefer the S II with an ICS update instead of paying the top dollar for the 2012 model.

Apple released the new iPad that was heavier and even thicker than the iPad 2 from last year but 4G LTE and Retina Display made us all forget about all other fallbacks. Apple is known for being narcissist about dimensions; the company never compromises on thickness and weight. But the new iPad still managed to sell in the tune of 3 million pieces in one week.

I expected the same case with S III. I knew there would be some shortfall in certain features but there will be something that will wash out every shortcoming. There are incremental upgrades in the new iteration but for me they are above average to excellent but not mind blowing, a sort of case we saw with iPhone 4 and 4S, but its loyalty manage to sell the product into 4 million hands in one week.

So let us talk about what we got in the new Galaxy S III.

The shape received reinforcements; Samsung shaved off the bump at the lower-end of the back. The screen has been upsized from 4.3 inches to 4.8 inches with HD resolution with Super-AMOLED technology for vivid display. There is Samsung Exynos 4 quad-core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz under the hood and an upgraded GPU. The US version will be 4G LTE-enabled.
