South Africa’s Travis Logie put on a superb show to claim top honours in the sixth heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that continued at the renowned surfing spot of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Tuesday, May 1.

With his success in his Round 3 heat, Logie confidently made his way into the fourth round (Round of 48) of the competition. Hawaii’s Kekoa Bacalso also successfully extended his life in the event after managing to secure runner-up position.

With a large prize purse and coveted ASP ranking points on offer, a number of up-and-coming talent, both local as well as international, had arrived at Lower Trestles to compete. The participation of current ASP World Tour contenders further raised the hype of the event, promising a heavy dose of thrilling action over the course of next few days. The conditions at the event site were not the easiest to surf in. However, the clean two-to-four waves provided the surfers with plenty of potential scoring opportunities. It came down to the experience of the surfers as they hunted for good scores.

The sixth heat of Round 3 saw Logie against Bacalso, Brazil’s Hizunome Bettero and his fellow countryperson Alex Ribeiro.

Logie was the most experienced surfer in the four-man battle, a factor that played a huge role in determining outcome of the battle. The South African put on a spectacular performance after adjusting exceptionally well to the conditions at hand. Navigating his way through the waves with utmost ease and skill, Logie posted a couple of impressive scores on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 15.73 points. The score held up until the end to seal the fate of the battle in his favour and thus send him through into the next round.

Bacalso also made the Round 4 cut after putting on a decent performance for a two-wave total of 12.63 points, which proved sufficient to earn him runner-up position.

Bettero and Ribeiro had seen better days as far as their performance on the opening day of the latest ASP PRIME event was concerned. Finishing with a heat-total of 12.20 and 9.37 points, both Bettero and Ribeiro found themselves eliminated from them contention for the event title.
