Likeminded forms alliance with PML-N
Saturday, May 12th, 2012 3:27:45 by Faisal FarooqIn order to give tough time to Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and PML-Likeminded reached an agreement to form a political alliance in the upcoming general elections.
The agreement of seat-to-seat adjustment was signed by general secretaries of both parties in Raiwind on Saturday.
From the Likeminded Group Humayon Akhtar, Gohar Ayub, Salim Saifullah, Hamid Nasir Chattha and Kashmala Tariq took part in the meeting. From PML-N side Nawaz Sharif was leading a group of party leaders including Shahbaz Sharif, Mehtab Abbasi, Zafar Iqbal Jhagra
Addressing the press conference where the agreement was announced, Humayun Akhtar, the General Secretary of Likeminded, briefed the media on the number of seats allotted to the party.
He observed, “According to the agreement made between the two parties today, 30 (which come to 11 percent) general seats in the National Assembly have been allotted to Likeminded in the upcoming elections”.
The Likeminded leader further said that the same percentage of general seats have been allotted to Likeminded for all provinces, saying that allocation of reserved seats for women, minorities and the senate were to be based on other terms.
He commented, “Likeminded will be given fair representation in parliamentary boards, manifesto committees and bodies for future alliances”.
PML-N Secretary-General Zafar Iqbal Jhagrha while speaking on the occasion said, “Both parties agree that the country’s conditions – whether in Karachi, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Gilgit-Baltistan – are rapidly deteriorating”.
He said that two parties have agreed that they would have to join hands if they have to rescue the country from this crisis and establish stability.
After absorbing the Mumtaz Bhutto’s Sindh National Front (SNF), the PML-N succeeded to engage the PML-Likeminded, a breakaway faction of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).
Last year, the Likeminded group had entered into negotiations with PTI Chairman Imran Khan to discuss a possible alliance. However, the talks broke down after Imran asked Likeminded leaders to join his party individually or collectively.
