Prime Minister Gilani glazes tenuous Pak-US relations
Saturday, May 12th, 2012 10:04:02 by Faisal FarooqRejecting reports that Pakistan would not be welcomed to Chicago summit, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani stressed that negotiations regarding the reopening of NATO supply routes are still underway.
While addressing a detailed press briefing at the Pakistan High Commissioner in London, Prime Minister Gilani said it was premature to say anything about the resumption of NATO supply routes.
He observed, “The PCNS recommendations were passed unanimously – the government was told to negotiate with the United States on this basis. That is what we are doing. There is no outcome yet”.
He stated that their negotiations were underway and when they end, then they could say something, adding they were in the middle of discussions.
When he was asked questions about the reaction of British Prime Minister David Cameron on the recent statements of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Gilani recalled that his counterpart had already said that any enemy of Pakistan was an enemy of the UK.
The judiciary is totally independent and if there was any concrete evidence against Hafiz Saeed, it should be presented before the courts, he added saying it is not up to the government to take a decision on this matter.
Commenting on US insistence regarding presence of Ayman al Zawahiri and Mullah Omar Pakistan, he clarified that relations between the CIA and ISI have always been excellent, stressing that the two had hit many al Qaeda high value targets together because of this cooperation.
Both the United States and Pakistan are still partnership mode and are looking out for bilateral interests, he added.
The premier also hit out at the criticism by the opposition, saying the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had attempted its utmost to discredit him and to have him disqualified. He, however, said that all such efforts had been failed and he didn’t believe in the interpretation of the Sharif Courts.
In his view, the PML-N was only harming the image of the country, expressing disappointment with the conduct of the main opposition party.
The notion of a clash of institutions was only being created by Nawaz Sharif, he added saying that if all quarters work within their ambit there can be, and will be, no clash.
