Missing persons is key issue of Balochistan: Supreme Court
Monday, May 14th, 2012 2:54:51 by Faisal FarooqThe Supreme Court expressed its displeasure over the deteriorating situation of Balochistan, saying the missing persons were the key issue of the province.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed hearing of the missing persons’ case, saying evidence exists against Frontier Corps (FC).
Chief Justice Chaudhry Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry observed, “There is evidence against the FC and we cannot keep our eyes closed”. He said that 15 days have passed and several adjournments were made, but to no avail.
The chief justice said that CCTV footage showed that an FC vehicle had picked up three missing persons. Inspector General FC, Corps Major Gen. Obaidullah Khattak insisted the video didn’t prove that the missing persons were picked up by security forces.
He claimed that some individuals wearing FC uniform did this act, adding that the militants made some 1,900 attacks on FC and none of the attackers could be traced.
Responding to which, Chief Justice Iftikhar commented, “If you are defending certain measures taken, the court still cannot shut its eyes to them”. He further said that there was evidence showing that the FC was involved in abducting people from the province.
Furthermore, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain told Maj-Gen Khattak that fingers were being pointed at him. Whereupon, Major-Gen Khattak denied the accusations, saying the FC was itself looking for missing persons.
Replying to which, the chief justice said that who will recover them if the Rangers and the police fail to recover the abducted people. A statement of an ASI regarding lifting of persons by FC was also presented on this occasion.
Later, the court directed IG Balochistan and IG to submit a joint statement in the case pertaining to the law and order situation in the province and the missing persons’ case.
The court directed Inspector General Balochistan Police and Maj-Gen Khattak to submit a joint statement in the case. The case’s hearing was later adjourned to May 21.
